What to Expect During Your Casita Build: A Step-by-Step Guide

April 20, 2026·5 min read

Building a casita in your backyard is a big project, and you deserve to know exactly what to expect. Here's a step-by-step walkthrough of the Space Break Construction build process.

Step 1: Free Consultation (Week 1)

We visit your property, walk your yard, and assess what's possible. We'll discuss your goals (rental income, family housing, home office), recommend a model, and talk through placement options. This visit is free, and there's no obligation to proceed.

Step 2: Design & Quote (Week 1-2)

You pick your model and we give you one clear price. That price includes everything — design, permits, structural engineering, materials, construction, and finish. No hidden fees, no change orders. The number we say is the number you pay.

Step 3: Permitting (Weeks 2-8)

This is where most builders lose homeowners — buried in city paperwork. We handle 100% of the permitting. City applications, structural engineering plans, zoning review, and any HOA coordination. You don't make a single call. Permit timelines vary by city, but typically take 4-6 weeks.

Step 4: Foundation & Framing (Weeks 8-12)

Once permits are approved, our crew breaks ground. We pour the foundation, frame the structure, and rough-in electrical and plumbing. You'll see your casita take shape quickly — most of the structural work happens in the first few weeks of construction.

Step 5: Systems & Finish (Weeks 12-20)

Electrical, plumbing, HVAC, insulation, drywall, flooring, cabinetry, fixtures, paint, and exterior stucco. This is where your casita goes from a frame to a finished home. Our crew handles every trade in-house — no subcontractors.

Step 6: Inspection & Handoff (Week 20-24)

Final city inspection, certificate of occupancy, and a full walkthrough with you. We walk every inch of your new casita, address any questions, and hand you the keys. Your warranty starts the day we hand over.

The Timeline

Most casita builds take 4-6 months from signed contract to move-in ready. The biggest variable is permit processing time, which depends on your city. We'll give you a realistic timeline at your consultation based on current permit backlogs in your area.

What You Don't Have to Worry About

You don't have to move out. You don't have to call the city. You don't have to coordinate subcontractors. You don't have to chase down inspections. We handle all of it. That's the Space Break difference.
